Inolex has received a European patent for safe, sustainable storage technology

And introducing Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA, 100% natural caprylhydroxamic acid in powder form

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, April 12, 2024 — European patent EP3075401B1

Inolex builds on its safe and sustainable storage platform with newly issued European patent EP3075401B1, which is directed to paraben-free multifunctional compositions for topical cosmetic, toilet and pharmaceutical compositions that require caprylhydroxamic acid and vicinal diol, and methods of using the compositions for protection against microbiological growth.

Inolex also announces the addition of Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA, a 100% natural non-palm derived chelating agent, in powder form, to its line of Spectrastatâ„¢ preservation products.

When designing caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA) preservation systems, pairing it with a vicinal diol, commonly called a medium-chain terminal diol (MCTD), is critical to effective product protection. Various MCTDs can be used to achieve effective preservation when combined with CHA, including caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate, and caprylyl glyceryl ether. This combination of materials and the resulting effective preservation of cosmetic products is described in the newly issued Inolex patent. Optimized combinations form the basis of Inolex’s broad-spectrum storage systems, marketed under the Spectrastatâ„¢ trade name.

“Inolex safe storage technology combines multiple techniques to create an environment that is inhospitable to microbial growth, known as the barrier technology approach,” explains Dr. Michael J. Fevola, Vice President of Research and Development at Inolex. “Hurdle technology is an intelligent combination of different retention factors or techniques (‘hurdles’) to achieve a wide range and reliable retention effects.”

Combining Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA with MCTD creates a highly effective barrier technology ingredient combination that provides broad-spectrum protection against microbial growth over a wide pH range in cosmetic formulations.

Inolex introduces Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA, a 100% natural coconut-derived organic acid and chelating agent, as a stand-alone component to provide maximum flexibility. For microbiologists and formulators who prefer to work with individual ingredients when designing their preservation systems, Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA offers a sustainable source of caprylhydroxamic acid that remains effective at neutral pH and prevents yeast and mold growth in formulations. It is backed by Inolex’s high quality standards and the company’s extensive portfolio of safety tests validated by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) expert group.

“Our broad portfolio of safe, sustainable storage technologies includes individual multi-functional components and complete broad-spectrum systems so brands can choose their approach to storage,” says Fevola.

• Formulators who prefer to work with pre-optimized combinations or prefer to simplify supply chain complexity by purchasing only one product can choose from Inolex’s wider range of Spectrastatâ„¢ products. The Spectrastatâ„¢ line combines CHA and MCTDs in optimized ratios for best preservation efficacy plus added carriers for easy formulation.

• Formulators who prefer to work with individual ingredients to create their own combinations can choose to combine Spectrastatâ„¢ CHA with MCTD from Inolex’s Lexgard® line to achieve broad-spectrum preservation efficacy. Lexgard®’s range of ingredients provides additional benefits depending on formulation needs.

“Our proprietary formulations and methods provide a flexible ingredient platform that gives formulators choice in developing their optimal consumer product preservation system,” says Fevola. “We take the guesswork out of advanced canning by giving formulators an entire technology platform and complete flexibility to meet their individual needs.”
